Für eine Reihe von Cryptanden wurde die Oxidationsbeständigkeit der EuII-Komplexe in wässriger Lösung ermittelt (siehe Bild). Einer dieser EuII-Komplexe ist beständiger als FeII-Hämoglobin und somit wohl die am wenigsten oxidationsempfindliche EuII-Spezies in wässrigem Medium. Die hoch stabilen Komplexe sollten es ermöglichen, die außergewöhnlichen magnetischen und optischen Eigenschaften von EuII in vivo zu nutzen.
