The data on primary production from the Bay of \t \nBengal and the Andaman Sea are very meagre. The \t \nDanish Galathea Expedition during her round-the-\t \nworld cruise, made some measurements across the \t \nIndian Ocean through the equatorial current system \t \nand in the Bay of Bengal, of which two stations were \t \nfrom the Andaman Sea. It was observed that in the \t \neastern part of Bay of Bengal, the lower bound ry of the \t \nphotosynthetic layer was between 84-99 ra and the \t \nstations located on the shelf were characterised by a \t \nhigh rate of production. In the Galathea report \t \n(Steemann Nielsen and Jensen, 1957), it was concluded \t \nthat the monsoon shift has some influence on the rate of \t \nproduction in the Bay of Bengal and that extensive \t \ninvestigations during the different seasons are necessary \t \nin order to get a true picture of the production of organic \t \nmatter.
