The appearance of the fifth edition of<i>Campbell's Operative Orthopaedics</i>coincides with the golden anniversary of the Campbell Clinic and reminds us of the great contribution this group has made through the years by bearing the burden of periodically renewing this encyclopedia of orthopedic surgery. The growth of the book has been well controlled. It has gained only slightly more than 250 pages since the fourth edition of eight years ago. This has been accomplished by pruning back old branches and allowing some new growth to appear. It is in this process of judiciously balancing the old and the new that the editor has most exposed himself to criticism. Many surgeons will note the inclusion of material which they deem to be irrelevant and will wonder at the omission of material which they believe would be of value. But these are personal choices, and on the whole the editor has
