A unified theory of grain boundaries. I. Symmetrie tilt boundaries

Abstract

A very generalized theory of symmetric tilt boundaries has been formulated for both ordered and disordered lattices which is based upon the concept that the dislocations comprising the grain boundary must be constructed of crystal lattice dislocations which are characteristic of the two neighboring grains. In addition, a number of conceptual difficulties associated with earlier theories have been clarified.
