During the course of a measles outbreak in Aberdeen, SD, five cases of atypical measles-like illness occurred in recipients of killed measles virus vaccine. The illness was severe and was characterized primarily by high fever, vesicular rash, and pulmonary consolidation. The large number of persons susceptible to this atypical illness and the resurgence of measles in the United States makes it likely that physicians will be seeing more of this phenomenon.
