Abstract

Not surprisingly for so distinguished and distinctive a mathematical physicist, the author concentrates chiefly on the formal structure and the group theoretical aspects of classical and quantum mechanics, both in their own right and as the features best adapted to unify both kinds of mechanics. The chapter headings are: 1 and 2 'Hamiltonian formulations, classical and quantum theory'; 3 'Lagrangian and variational formulations'; 4 'Dynamics of rigid bodies'; 5 'Planetary and atomic systems'.
