Abstract

Although Professor Kaplan says in the preface that perhaps he may be foolhardy writing this medical book almost single-handedly, he is not. He has done an admirable job. This edition, completed a little over four years since the last, updates the reader from the author's "twelve file cabinets of reprints" on the subject. A splendid chapter on "Hypertension in Childhood and Adolescence" is written by Professor of Pediatrics Ellin Lieberman. The first chapter gives an overview establishing the importance of the subject. The chapters on primary (essential) hypertension and its therapy take up almost half the book. Extensive information about pathophysiology is presented in each chapter. Comprehensive coverage of each of the forms of hypertension is evident in the subsequent chapters with many references at the end of each chapter. Under therapy, old subjects such as rice diets are mentioned, as well as new therapy such as calcium entry blockers.
