Abstract

This work presents a critical overview and an integrated application of two of the most promising digital technologies for the conservation of heritage buildings. On the one hand, the work discusses and evaluates the laser scanning technology and its current applications to preserving heritage buildings. On the other hand, the fundamentals and recent practices in 360° imaging are analysed. Finally, both technologies are integrated in two emblematic study cases, i.e. a large Neo-Manueline church in Portugal and a small Romanesque church in Spain, with the aim of creating geo-referenced enriched digital models and supporting the design of a proper preventive conservation plan. The large differences in terms of shape and extension of the investigated buildings demand the use and combination of different laser scanning and 360° imaging technologies in order to provide the best digital product at the least cost.
