Abstract

The mortality impacts of the HIV epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa are profound - adult mortality has doubled or trebled even in communities in which prevalence remains below 10 percent and life expectancy in many countries is falling rapidly. The social and demographic consequences of this unprecedented mortality increase have been the main focus of demographic research on the epidemic but in this paper we turn to a field which has received less attention: the links between HIV and fertility.
