Abstract

Three cores of less than a meter length were obtained from nearshore carbonate-rich sediments of Bermuda. The pore waters were removed from these sediments under an inert atmosphere, and analyzed for dissolved iron, manganese, molybdenum and copper. In general, iron, manganese and copper decreased with depth while molybdenum increased. This is similar to what has been reported in nearshore sulfide-rich terrigenous sediments. The formation of authigenic iron and manganese sulfldes apparently controls the distribution of these two metals in the pore fluids.Copper and molybdenum concentrations may be controlled by polysulf1de and/or thiooxy-metal complexation.
