No severe urographic abnormalities were undetected by the comprehensive renal scintillation procedure. Only 1.4 per cent of renal units had greater than minimal pyelocaliectasis or ureterectasis in the presence of a normal radionuclide examination. A relatively large number of abnormalities were detected on the renal scintillation procedure when the excretory urogram was normal. Serial followup will be required to determine the significance of these findings but present data suggest that a comprehensive renal scintillation procedure and a plain film of the kidneys, ureters and bladder may be used for screening upper urinary tract abnormalities in lieu of an excretory urogram. This is particularly advantageous for the spinal cord injury population, since there have been no toxic or allergic reactions reported, no bowel preparation or dehydration is required and there is relatively low radiation exposure. © 1981 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByCameron A, Rodriguez G and Schomer K (2018) Systematic Review of Urological Followup After Spinal Cord InjuryJournal of Urology, VOL. 187, NO. 2, (391-397), Online publication date: 1-Feb-2012.Perkash I and Giroux J (2018) Clean Intermittent Catheterization in Spinal Cord Injury Patients: A Followup StudyJournal of Urology, VOL. 149, NO. 5 Part 1, (1068-1071), Online publication date: 1-May-1993.Lloyd K, Kuhlemeier K, Fine P and Stover S (2018) Initial Bladder Management in Spinal Cord Injury: Does it Make A Difference?Journal of Urology, VOL. 135, NO. 3, (523-527), Online publication date: 1-Mar-1986.Kuhlemeier K, Lloyd L and Stover S (2018) Long-Term Followup of Renal Function After Spinal Cord InjuryJournal of Urology, VOL. 134, NO. 3, (510-513), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1985.Tempkin A, Sullivan G, Paldi J and Perkash I (2018) Radioisotope Renography in Spinal Cord InjuryJournal of Urology, VOL. 133, NO. 2, (228-230), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1985.Kuhlemeier K, Huang C, Lloyd L, Fine P and Stover S (2018) Effective Renal Plasma Flow: Clinical Significance after Spinal Cord InjuryJournal of Urology, VOL. 133, NO. 5, (758-761), Online publication date: 1-May-1985.Kuhlemeier K, Mceachran A, Lloyd L, Stover S, Tauxe W, Dubovsky E and Fine P (2018) Renal Function after Acute and Chronic Spinal Cord InjuryJournal of Urology, VOL. 131, NO. 3, (439-445), Online publication date: 1-Mar-1984.
