The document was prepared under contract by the Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada for Industry, Science and Technology Canada, on behalf of the National Biotechnology Advisory Committee. The objective of the study was to determine the current status of biotechnology in the pulp and paper industry in Canada, and to provide a basis for public discussion on possible courses of future action in terms of: the awareness of developments in this field and the readiness and prospects for technology transfer; the need for training programs for scientists; the role of industry, as well as universities and government, in promoting biotechnology in the industry; and the regulatory climate.
