In screening microorganisms for antimicrobial metabolites, we found that the culture broth of Gloeophyllum sepiarium, a wood-rotting basidiomycete, exhibited a strong antifungal activity. We isolated an active principle from the cultural filtrate and demon strated it to be oosponol, as reported in the previous paper.1) In the present paper, we report the isolation of oospolactone (3,4-dimethyl-8-hydroxyisocoumarin) as the second active component.
