Abstract

Objectives of the project reported on were-: To develop a methodology for assessing the energy and carbon budgets of biofuel systems using wood fuel coppice as an example. To model the energy and carbon budgets of wood fuel coppice systems. To identify the main inputs of fossil fuel which limit the efficiency of wood fuel coppice systems. It briefly reviews past research into the energy and carbon flows associated with woody biomass producing systems, and defines the system boundary for this study. The system is taken to consist of the biomass producing site, typically a farm, including all operations that are necessary to turn the harvested biomass into utilisable biofuel. Wood is considered utilisable once processed into manageable chips. Subsequent processing (or ''post-processing''), for example into bioethanol, is regarded as an entirely separate system. Furthermore, the system which utilises the biofuel is not included in the analysis. (Author)
