Co 3 O 4 nanospheres with a preferential (110) surface orientation showed excellent catalytic properties in the selective gas-phase oxidation of 2-propanol. A preferential Mars–van Krevelen mechanism on the Co 3 O 4 (110) surface was identified by DFT + U .
