Ring-closing metathesis was used as a key step in the first total syntheses of the streptogramin antibiotics griseoviridin (1) and its C-8 epimer starting from D- and L-cystine, respectively. This synthetic endeavor confirms that the relative configuration about the hydoxy groups at C-18 and C-20 as having a 1,3-syn relationship (the structure of 1 was determined in 1976 by X-ray studies but was reported in error with regard to the relative C-18, C-20 configuration).
