Abstract

During each year many road accidents are caused by the drowsiness of the driver: for this reason, to equip each car with a system that can alert the driver about a drowsiness event can be crucial to make driving safer and reduce the mortality rate associated to this cause. Such a system should monitor the vital parameters of the driver in a minimally invasive way, and use the measured data to detect if he/she is getting sleepy. In this work a non-contact technique based on the use of radars is proposed: two different radar systems are used to detect vital parameters of the driver (heart and respiration rates), and their performance are compared.
