In order to realise the biocompatibility and antibacterial activity of Ti alloy to meet the requirements of oral and orthopaedic applications, drug-loaded hydroxyapatite coatings doped with strontium were designed and constructed on the surface of Ti alloy using layer-by-layer assembly and hydrothermal treatment. The obtained coating was characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The biological assays showed that the composite coating exhibited excellent biocompatibility and antibacterial activity. Therefore, based on the in vitro studies, it can be claimed that the LbL assembly and the multifunctional coating can act as a promising surface-engineering strategy for the functionalization of Ti alloy in clinical trials.
