The <italic>in situ</italic> growth of Mo-containing MOFs on nickel foam was achieved through the conversion of CoMo hydroxide/oxide nanosheets. After pyrolysis, ultrafine Mo<sub>x</sub>C nanoparticles were encapsulated in carbon with sufficient active sites and protection.
