NiCo<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> is <italic>in situ</italic> assembled on g-C<sub>3</sub>N<sub>4</sub> and works as a novel oxygen-evolution-reaction cocatalyst to promote photocatalytic O<sub>2</sub>-evolution reaction, then Pt–NiCo<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> dual cocatalyst loaded g-C<sub>3</sub>N<sub>4</sub> achieves photocatalytic overall water splitting.
