Abstract To remain economically viable, the worldwide sweet cherry industry requires a tree much smaller than that on which current production is based. Labor requirements and high land costs would be reduced with compact trees. Among the different approaches to reduce tree size, we have concentrated our efforts on the breeding of rootstocks that would dwarf the scion cultivars grafted onto them.
