The paper describes a study, which was targeted to assess the seismic hazard of the city of L'Aquila. The study involved: i) detai­led geological survey of the urban area; ii) morpho-tectonic analy­sis of the fault escarpment hanging above the city; and iii) gravity prospecting aimed at defining the geometry of the contact between the bedrock and the Quaternary deposits underlying the city.
