Molten-salt and volumetric-air receiver plants, of 30-MW[sub e] and 100-MW[sub e] power size, were evaluated with the interest of assessing their technical and economical potential. The study developed a common guideline and used data from previous system tests and studies. The levelized-energy costs (LEC) in solar-only operation for both the 30-MW[sub e] salt and air plants range from 15.4 to 16.4 cts/kWh and from 8.5 to 9.8 cts/kWh for the 100-MW[sub e] plants. Additionally, the study presents results of a reliability analysis and an uncertainty analysis. Mid- and long-term technical potentials are also described. Recommendations for the RandD activities needed to reach the goal of the envisaged demonstration and commercialization of the central receiver technologies are given, too. (orig./BWI)
