This study describes lag sequential analysis and its unique contributions to the research literature addressing communication processes in school-based consultation. By assessing the statistical probabilities of sequences and patterns of consultant and consultee behaviors, this tool opens a new and important array of research possibilities. The results of lag sequential analysis are likened to “moving pictures” in comparison to the more static “still photographs” derived from prior research methodologies limited largely to analyzing summative information (e.g., the percentage of statements made during a session that were specifications). For the purposes of demonstrating the application and potential utility of lag sequential analysis, the communication behaviors of two consultants are analyzed using data gathered from twenty 15-min problem identification interviews. Directions for future research are considered.
