Abstract

The formation stages of hybrid halide perovskite MAPbI3 when methylammonium-based reactive polyiodide melts (RPMs) are reacted with PbI2 platy crystals at room temperature are studied. The local dissolution of the lead-containing precursor and subsequent crystallization of homogeneously formed nuclei is found to be the major perovskite crystallization mechanism under these conditions. The iodine content in the reaction mixture acts as a very important parameter for controlling the rate and degree of PbI2 conversion, which can be used to develop new preparation techniques to produce light-harvesting layers for solar cells with a tunable coating morphology.
