To enable this technology, improved catalysts must be developed. Herein, we report trends in the electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 on a broad group of seven transition metal surfaces: Au, Ag, Zn, Cu, Ni, Pt, and Fe. Contrary to conventional knowledge in the field, all metals studied are capable of producing methane or methanol. We quantify reaction rates for these two products and describe catalyst activity and selectivity in the framework of CO binding energies for the different metals. While selectivity toward methane or methanol is low for most of these metals, the fact that they are all capable of producing these products, even at a low rate, is important new knowledge. This study reveals a richer surface chemistry for transition metals than previously known and provides new insights to guide the development of improved CO2 conversion catalysts.1e:T4bc,The electrocatalytic reduction reaction of CO₂ (CO₂RR) is a promising strategy to promote the global carbon balance and combat global climate change. Herein, exclusive Bi-N₄ sites on porous carbon networks can be achieved through thermal decomposition of a bismuth-based metal-organic framework (Bi-MOF) and dicyandiamide (DCD) for CO₂RR. Interestingly, in situ environmental transmission electron microscopy (ETEM) analysis not only directly shows the reduction from Bi-MOF into Bi nanoparticles (NPs) but also exhibits subsequent atomization of Bi NPs assisted by the NH₃ released from the decomposition of DCD. Our catalyst exhibits high intrinsic CO₂ reduction activity for CO conversion, with a high Faradaic efficiency (FE_CO up to 97%) and high turnover frequency of 5535 h^-1 at a low overpotential of 0.39 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Further experiments and density functional theory results demonstrate that the single-atom Bi-N₄ site is the dominating active center simultaneously for CO₂ activation and the rapid formation of key intermediate COOH* with a low free energy barrier.1f:T524,Electrochemical reduction of CO₂ (CO₂RR) provides great potential for intermittent renewable energy storage. This study demonstrates a predominant shape-dependent electrocatalytic reduction of CO₂ to CO on triangular silver nanoplates (Tri-Ag-NPs) in 0.1 M KHCO₃. Compared with similarly sized Ag nanoparticles (SS-Ag-NPs) and bulk Ag, Tri-Ag-NPs exhibited an enhanced current density and significantly improved Faradaic efficiency (96.8%) and energy efficiency (61.7%), together with a considerable durability (7 days). Additionally, CO starts to be observed at an ultralow overpotential of 96 mV, further confirming the superiority of Tri-Ag-NPs as a catalyst for CO₂RR toward CO formation. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the significantly enhanced electrocatalytic activity and selectivity at lowered overpotential originate from the shape-controlled structure.
