Abstract

Most magnetic fluid seals are multitooth structures for the high sealing capacity. However, the pressure transfer mechanism in the multitooth magnetic fluid seal is only carried out through experimental methods. In this article, a simulation method is presented to solve the two-phase flow of magnetic fluid and air in the sealing clearance. The boundary of the magnetic fluid is obtained by a volume of fluid method. In addition, a planar multitooth magnetic fluid seal is presented to observe the magnetic fluid barrier and obtain the pressure change during the pressure transfer process. The result shows that the fluid barrier ruptures when the pressure difference exceeds the sealing capacity. The pressure is transferred chamber by chamber in the multitooth magnetic fluid seal.
