Abstract This paper gives an exact solution of the problem of running a system having a single degree of freedom and linear damping through its critical speed from rest at a uniform acceleration. An exact expression is found for the envelope in which are located the maximum amplitudes. The results are plotted for various rates of acceleration and for various dampings.
