Artificial Ventilation by Respirator For Newborn and Small Infants During Anaesthesia

Abstract

SUMMARY Two methods for calculation of the administered pulmonary ventilatory volume during artificial ventilation with the Engström respirator have been investigated in a case material consisting of 17 infants aged from 1 day to 23 months. The effect of the ventilation during the influence of surgical procedures was assessed through measurement of carbon dioxide tension in arterialized capillary blood and infra‐red analysis of the carbon dioxide content of “alveolar” gas. A very good agreement between the calculated and measured pulmonary ventilation could be demonstrated. The carbon dioxide analyses revealed that during ventilation based on Radford's standards a mild hyperventilation is produced. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Bei 17 Säuglingen und Kleinkindern im Alter von 1 Tag bis 23 Monaten wurden 2 Methoden zur Berechnung der Lungenventilation bei künstlicher Beatmung mit dem Engström Respirator untersucht. Der Effekt der Beatmung wurde durch Messung der Kohlendioxyd‐Konzen‐tration im arterialisierten Kapillarblut und durch Infrarotanalyse der Kohlen‐dioxyd‐Fraktion im “Alveolargas” beurteilt. Zwischen den berechneten und den gemessenen Werten fur die Lungenventilation fand sich eine sehr gute Übereinstimmung. Die Kohlendioxyd‐Analysen liessen erkennen, dass bei Berechnung der Beatmung nach dem Radford'schen Standard eine leichte Hyperventilation auftrat.
