Die Allylalkoholfunktion in der Basalebene von Graphitoxid (GO) lässt sich durch eine sigmatrope Eschenmoser-Claisen-Umlagerung unter Verwendung von N,N-Dimethylacetamiddimethylacetal in N,N-Dimethylamidgruppen umwandeln. Eine anschließende Verseifung dieser Gruppen ergibt die Carbonsäuren (siehe Bild), die bei Deprotonierung die Graphenblätter in einer wässrigen Umgebung elektrostatisch stabilisieren.
