A systematic investigation is made on the relation between the austenite stability and the mechanical p roperties with Fe-Mn-C r alloys . It is shown that the alloys with low austenite stability have high tensile strengths but are poor in elongation, while the high austenite stability yields low strength and high du ctility . it is also demonstrated th at ( (hcp ) martensite plays a significant role for the low temperature toughness . T he strength and toughness are discussed in terms of the structure , martensitic t ransformation , stacking fa ult en~rgy andfractography.
