Two types of maerl beds have been recognized in the bay of Morlaix: the beds of Lithothamnium corallioides var. corallioid.es, beds of rough sand, in most cases not muddy, and beds of Lithothamnium corallioides var. minima, beds of fine sands, in most cases muddy. The beds have an epiflora which constitutes in the whole a summer association with Sporochnus pedunculatus and Arthrocladia villosa, analogous to that noticed for the Mediterranean Sea on the beds of gravel and of maerl. The study of the seasonal variations of this epiflora shows during winter a persistance of a permanent micro-population, constituted by very small species and in most cases linked to that type of substratum. Variations of the nature of the Corallinacea constituting these beds are shown. They are of two types and may be attributed to: 1—the low frequency of reproductory phenomena; 2—to sedimentological modifications occurring in the beds of the neighourhood.
