The study in this paper is preceded by the experimental validation of a 5.5 kW three-phase squirrel cage induction motor prototype under no-load operating condition. Based on data from the experimental prototype, the machine is modelled and evaluated in finite element, in both three-phase and six- phase, and then operated under no-load, load and asymmetrical fault conditions. The main purpose of remodelling the machine in six-phase is to evaluate the fault-tolerant capability under different performance requirements in terms of torque, speed and core losses. The results show better performance on the part of six- phase motor under fault compared to three-phase one.
