Due to the fluctuation and intermittency of wind power, adequate reactive compensation devices need to be installed in the wind farm booster station to control the voltage within a reasonable range, leading to great investment of reactive compensation device. With development of wind power technology, reactive power control capability of wind generator (WG) can be utilized in voltage control of wind farm. Based on a practical wind farm in Hubei province, the composition of the system loss and shares of each element in the wind farm are studied. The influence of transformer tap stalls and reactive power compensation output and power factor of WGs on system power loss and bus voltages are analyzed in detail. Taking minimum power loss as the objective function, results of different reactive power optimization methods under different wind power are compared. Conclusions of this research can provide a reference for the economic operation of wind farm.
