This paper has the purpose of evaluating the application of computer simulation methods for characterizing the distribution of the electric field generated by power transmission lines. Analysis through computer simulation with the charge simulation method and the finite element method are performed for a comparison with measured practical data obtained from a 525 kV power transmission line, located in the Southern area of Brazil. The comparison methodology is quantitative and based on concepts of the literature. The results show a difference between the methods, and this difference can characterize the limiting exposure to the electric field, as is show in this paper.
