Highly active porous FeCo/carbon oxygen electrocatalysts with well-defined multiple active sites have been prepared <italic>via</italic> a scalable mechanochemical route, which perform better than precious metal Pt/C and RuO<sub>2</sub> in rechargeable Zn–air batteries.
