Abstract

By adopting an epidemiological approach to the study of ADHD and entrepreneurship, we bridge the gap between mainstream ADHD research and entrepreneurship research on ADHD. Based on a longitudinal dataset of a total of 87,587 new ventures founded by 136,850 individuals in the period 2004 to 2013 in Denmark, we link professionally made ADHD diagnosis to fact-based entrepreneurial behavior and performance. We embrace a bi-valent view about the merits of ADHD in entrepreneurship, arguing both its advantages and disadvantages. By making reference to the motivational, social and creativity talent advantages that benefit certain “underdogs”, we investigate several proxies for such talents in the form of education and marriage that may turn the liability of ADHD into an asset.
