Trisubstituted 2-buten-4-olides 1(7 examples) and α, β-unsaturated ketones and esters 2 (5 examples) undergo conjugate reduction to the corresponding carbonyl compounds in good to high yield in the presence of the potassium formate/palladium(II) acetate system.
