A facile route to the aromatic bisabolane sesquiterpenes has been developed by employing a novel hydrogenolytic cleavage of the ether bond of the homobenzylic-homoallylic position of a 4,5-dihydro-6-aryl-1,3-dioxepine under the dissolving metal reduction conditions.
