The use of TTMSS (tris(trimethylsilyl)silane) as a free-radical mediator permits the carbonylation of an aliphatic halide to an aldehyde under reasonably law pressures of carbon monoxide. Furthermore, a three-component coupling process providing unsymmetrical ketones has been achieved using a nearly stoichiometric amount of olefins.
