Abstract The title compound (1) was synthesized by desulfurization of 2,13-dithia[4.4]orthocyclophane. The molecular structure of 1 which has antiperiplanar arrangement of the two benzene rings was obtained by an X-ray crystallographic analysis. Molecular mechanics calculation using MM3 and our MMRS program has indicated that the anti structure found in crystal is the most stable conformer. Variable temperature 1H NMR measurement has disclosed that the contribution of the conformers other than the anti is negligible.
