The structure of the title compound, Cs4YbCl7 consists of layers of composition Cs2YbCl6 containing isolated YbCl63− octahedra, separated from each other by layers of composition Cs2Cl containing sixfold disordered Cl ions. Similarities and differences with the cubic elpasolite structure and some of its distortional variants are discussed. The compound decomposes at ca 520 K into the neighbouring phases CsCl and Cs3YbCl6.
