Abstract

Corrosion, particularly metal corrosion, is a major cause of the depreciation of goods. Coating material represents one method used to prevent corrosion. Here, we studied the preparation of a hybrid coating based on hydrolyzed and condensable alkoxysilane and epoxy/polyurethane resin. It was characterized using viscosity analysis, gel permeation chromatography. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, and thermal properties analysis. The effects of pH on the hydrolysis and condensation of alkoxysilane, and subsequently on the properties of the hybrid coating product, have been studied. All hybrid coating products had better mechanical properties than epoxy resin before modification. These results indicate that hybrid coatings based on hydrolyzed and condensable alkoxysilane and epoxy/polyurethane have the potential for application as coating materials with improved properties compared to epoxy resin.
