Abstract

All the fossil mammals here described have been found in South African cave or fissure deposits. One or two have been briefly described without figures; while a number have been figured without any descriptions. It as at present quite impossible to give the age of most of the mammals. The caves, on the Sterkfontein and Kromdraai farms, Are found over an area many square miles in extent, and even in one large cave there are possibly different horizons. Even in caves only a few hundred yards apart, the geological ages may be very different.
