Abstract

In this present study, the emissions characteristics of four stroke, single-cylinder, water-cooled, diesel-engine fuelled with different blends of pongamia biodiesel i.e. PBD100, PPBD100Mgo1000 (100 ppm nano-additive dispersed in PBD100) and PPBD100Mgo200 (200 ppm nano-additive dispersed in PBD100) at 1800rpm for compression ratio 17.5:1 were investigated. The transesterification process was used for biodiesel production with the presence of the alkaline catalyst (KOH) and methanol. The optimum biodiesel yield was found to be 88%. Results revelled that the NOx, HC, CO and smoke emissions were reduced with the increase in the concentration of MgO. It was also observed that PPBD100Mgo200 showed effective results when compared to diesel fuel.
