The association of TPH cells with disease activity suggests the involvement of extrafollicular T-B cell interactions in the pathogenesis of SLE. TPH cells promote autoantibody production in aberrant lymphoid organs and therefore might be a novel therapeutic target in autoantibody-producing disorders.
