Platypus Bay on the northwestern side of Fraser Island is the only site in Queensland known to frequently harbour ciguateric fishes. Benthic biodetritus samples sieved from Cladophora contained Gambierdiscus toxicus with mean population densities of 4-556 cells per gram of Cladophora. Putative major and minor gambiertoxins (precursors of the ciguatoxins) were detected from biodetritus samples suggesting that these G. toxicus populations are the origin of the toxins in ciguateric fishes caught in Platypus Bay. -from Authors
