Abstract

Introduction The analysis of sports performance can be undertaken from several different standpoints. The biochemist may focus on the depletion of substrate used as fuel for the provision of energy to the working muscles during sports competition, while the physiologist may attend to the exercise responses in the respiratory, cardiovascular and neuromuscular systems. The biomechanist – as well as the student of motor control – may be interested in how the kinetic and kinematic profiles that describe skilful acts change as a result of learning or fatigue, while the sports psychologist may investigate various mental aspects that are associated with skilled actions. Even though each discipline (or sub-discipline) differs in its theoretical constructs, dependent variables and tools of measurement, one important feature remains invariant. Each discipline converges upon a performance outcome that has meaning within the context of the sports contest being examined. Match analysis describes sports behaviours at this level of performance outcome, coding the actions of individuals or groups in technical terms that have relevance to players and coaches.
