SUMMARY Some experiments on birds, fish and insects, in which long records of steady-state behaviour are obtained, are described and the relative merits of three simple models of behaviour considered. As a first approximation, semi-Markov chains seem to offer a reasonable way of summarizing the data and provide suitable null hypotheses against which to test ethological theories.
