Anticoagulation therapy in Australia

Abstract

Anticoagulant therapy is prescribed for many clinical indications, including treatment and prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE), such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), as well as stroke prophylaxis in atrial fibrillation (AF) and to reduce the risk of prosthetic heart valve thrombosis and thromboembolism. In this narrative review, we briefly outline the anticoagulants available in Australia, their relative strengths and weaknesses, and the ever-changing local landscape with regards to anticoagulation therapy.
